Abstract
The field of sports expertise has had few leaders in its history – those who have made contributions that have ‘stood the test of time’. Undoubtedly, Dr. Janet (Jan) Starkes is one of those leaders. She began her sport science career as an athlete then coach in basketball where she developed her interest in sport and motor behaviour. It was an interest that would fuel her academic career for the next four decades. Jan completed Masters and Doctoral studies under the supervision of Fran Allard and Ron Marteniuk respectively, followed by post-doctoral studies in clinical neuropsychology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada. Until her recent retirement, Jan was a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.
